How Much Does 3D Printing Cost?
3D printing cost depends on material, part volume, quality settings, and quantity — not a flat “per hour” rate. Online quotes measure your file, estimate how much material and machine time the job needs, then apply setup and volume discounts. What drives the price
Most online quotes start from your model’s solid volume (and for FDM, how much of that volume is filled). That volume becomes weight using the material’s density, then a per-gram rate and a quality multiplier. A small setup fee covers file handling and job prep and is shared across the order, so ordering more parts usually lowers the per-unit price. Machine time also matters: larger or denser parts take longer on the bed, so a thick bracket costs more than a thin clip even when both use the same plastic.
Technology and material differences
FDM is usually the lowest cost for functional plastic parts — especially when you use moderate infill instead of printing solid. SLA resin is priced higher per gram but stays affordable for small, detailed parts because the absolute material use is low. SLS nylon sits above FDM for many geometries, but it often wins when you need durable, support-free shapes that would be expensive to finish on FDM. Specialty materials (flexible TPU, nylon, engineering resins) cost more than PLA or PETG because the feedstock and process window are tighter.
Typical ranges
Small FDM widgets (calibration cubes, clips, light brackets) often land from a few dollars to the low tens each at quantity one. Detailed SLA housings and cosmetic prototypes can cost more per gram but remain practical when the part is compact. SLS nylon brackets and ducts usually price higher than FDM equivalents, with the tradeoff of better isotropic strength and cleaner surfaces on complex shapes. How quantity changes the quote
Setup is split across every unit, and volume discounts kick in as you order more. Jumping from 1 to 10 parts often cuts the per-unit price roughly in half on small jobs, because you’re no longer paying full setup and machine overhead on a single piece. Larger batches (25, 50, 100+) unlock steeper discounts and are a common bridge between prototyping and tooling. How to lower cost
Hollow thick sections and add escape holes so resin or powder can drain. On FDM, drop infill when the part isn’t load-bearing — 15–20% is enough for many fixtures. Use draft or standard quality for fit checks and save fine settings for the final cosmetic run. Orient long, thin features to reduce supports and wasted material. Order the quantity you actually need for the next test, not a single spare every time. Designing for the process almost always beats sanding hours of overbuilt plastic.
